Chewing is a basic need for dogs. It keeps them occupied, relieves stress, and can reduce dental plaque. In addition to animal-based chews, olive wood chews have become very popular in recent years. Here you will find out what makes them so special, which size is right for your dog, and what you should pay attention to for safe use.
Why olive wood for chewing?
- Very hard and dense: Olive wood is one of the hardest woods in Europe. Instead of breaking into sharp splinters, it gradually wears down into fibers when chewed.
- No additives: A natural chew wood contains no flavorings, colorings, or preservatives.
- Calorie-free: Ideal for dogs that need to watch their weight.
- Low odor and clean: No grease, no stains on the carpet or sofa.
- Long-lasting: Depending on the chewing behavior, a chew wood lasts significantly longer than many edible chews.
Which size is right for my dog?
The most important rule: The chew wood must be significantly larger than your dog's mouth so that they cannot swallow it whole.
- Small dogs and cats: slim chew woods around 15 cm long, e.g. the 3-pack for small dogs or cats.
- Medium and large dogs: sturdy chew bones in 20, 25 or 30 cm length, e.g. the round olive wood chew bone.
If in doubt, choose one size larger.
How to use chew wood safely
- Introduce gradually: Offer the chew wood briefly at first and observe how your dog handles it.
- Always under supervision: Do not leave your dog unattended with a chew item – regardless of the material.
- Check regularly: Check the wood for sharp edges or splintered pieces. You can smooth rough spots with fine sandpaper.
- Replace in time: If the chew wood has become so small that it could be swallowed, replace it with a new one.
- Not for every dog: For very strong chewers, dental problems, or dogs that tend to swallow, it is best to ask your veterinarian beforehand.
Care and cleaning
You can simply rinse off saliva residue with warm water. Then let the chew wood dry completely in the air. Do not use cleaning agents and do not put it in the dishwasher.
Chew wood as part of enrichment
A chew wood does not replace walks or play, but it is a nice addition for quiet moments – for example after a walk or when guests are over. For cats, the olive wood cat wand is a natural toy that awakens the hunting instinct.
Frequently asked questions
Does olive wood splinter?
Olive wood is very hard and dense and splinters significantly less than many other woods. However, this can never be completely ruled out with a natural material – that is why regular inspection is important.
Can my dog swallow the chewed wood?
Small, fibrous shavings are normal when chewing. Your dog should not swallow larger pieces – remove them and replace the chew wood if necessary.
From what age is chew wood suitable?
For puppies during teething, the gums and teeth are sensitive. During this phase, it is best to talk to your veterinarian about whether and how long a hard chew wood is advisable.
